2016 August 8 — Alex Pinto and Seung Wook Shin published on how to selectively remove impurity phases from CZTS ad CZTSe thin films in Green Chemistry. The selective removal of Cu2−x(S,Se) impurity phases from Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin films is a major barrier to achieving high efficiencies in solar cells based on these films. A toxic and hazardous potassium cyanide (KCN) solution is commonly used as a selective etchant to remove Cu2−x(S,Se) from CZTSSe and CIGS thin films. Alex and Shin developed a method for selective removal of Cu2−x(S,Se) from kesterite CZTSSe thin films using a mixture of ethylenediamine and 2-mercaptoethanol, a safer chemical mixture than KCN. "Selective Removal of Cu2−x(S,Se) Phases from Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin Films," A. 2016 June 28 — Narula Bilik and Ben Greenberg extend ZnO nanocrystal synthesis to atmospheric plasmas, eliminating the need to use vacuum chambers and pumps, a significant reduction in cost. Article published in the Journal of Applied Physics  "Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharge Synthesis of Plasmonic and Photoluminescent Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals," N. 2016 June 6 — Bryce Williams defends his Ph.D. thesis and graduates. He will be joining Honeywell in Minneapolis. Congratulations Bryce!

2016 May 24 — Professors Aydil, Gagliardi and Leighton have been awarded $717,360 from the Institute on the Environment’s Renewable Electricity for Minnesota’s Future grant program. Established in 2015, the grant program seeks renewable_elec.pngto support interdisciplinary projects that increase market penetration of renewable electric energy resources. The project is entitled "Pyrite iron disulfide: Low-cost solution for renewable electricity." and the team will pursue the development of pyrite iron disulfide (FeS2), an Earth-abundant chemical, as a sustainable light-absorbing material for low-cost solar cells. 2016 May 13 —Anthony Coulter, Anne Hunter and Priyanka Ketkar all graduated with their B.S. degrees today. Congratulations!

2016 April 27  — Our collaborative research with Prof. Lee Penn's group on "Purification of Thin Film Solar Cell Absorber Materials"  has received a 2016 TechConnect National Innovation Award. Chemistry graduate student Alexander Pinto and CEMS post-doctoral scientist Seung Wook Shin techconnect.pngcollaborated to develop a new safer method to remove impurity sulfide phases from Copper Zinc Tin Sulfide (CZTS) and Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS)thin films. Previously, researchers used toxic KCN to accomplish the same task.  The new method provides a safer, easier and more effective method for removal of copper sulfide impurities in thin film solar cell materials. Specifically, the new method is potentially more cost-effective than current methods and uses less toxic solvents that are easier to handle.

2016 March 8 — Boris Chernomordik's article, with Priyanka Ketkar, Anne Hunter, Amelie Beland and Donna Deng,  on making CZTSSe thin films from nanocrystal dispersions is published in Chemistry of Materials"Microstructure Evolution During Selenization of Cu2ZnSnS4 Colloidal Nanocrystal Coatings," B. Chernomordik, P. Ketkar, A. Hunter, A. E. Beland, D. D. Deng and E. S. Aydil, Chem. Mater. 28, 1266-1276 (2016). They investigatedhow coatings comprising copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) nanocrystals evolve into polycrystalline CZTSSe thin films and studied the effects of selenium vapor pressure, annealing temperature, and heating rate on the microstructure.
